Did you ever wonder why people tend to stop and start when it comes to diet and fitness?
One week they’re super motivated and the next…crumbling at a super-calorific plate lying in front of them all because they’ve just lost will power.
If you’re curious about this subject or this sounds vaguely familiar, you might be wondering why. What does it take to be consistent?
And where do people go wrong?
In this post I’ll be sharing some thoughts from my own experience with my health and fitness, plus I’ll be listing the good habits you need to get in to, to be successful yourself.
Not a pro
Let me start off by saying, I’m a sinner like you. I’ve feel like I’ve been through a lot highs and lows with my body and rarely have felt fully satisfied and proud of the end result.
One of the highs for me, was back in the day when I was kid, competing at elite level sport.
You know what it felt like? Like I was on top of the world.
That was because I just felt happy having a strong body. I was amazed at how much it could achieve, how far I’d pushed it to.
All the limits I’d seen others hit, I was able to overide. I’m not saying this to intimidate anyone, just explaining the sensation of what it feels like to be fit.
Like, really, really fit.
But you know what I also learned? You don’t have to be a pro to enjoy exercise. Let me say that again:

Don’t compare yourself
I think sometimes we get so caught up in the comparison of ourselves with others that we don’t realise that there is only one person that we’re actually competing with: ourselves.
See, when you realise that – you’re onto a winner. Not that there’s any losing in this either, but we’ll get onto that point later.
If we start with the conception that everyone in life is on a journey, what does that say to you?
Fitness is no different. There are no two people with the same amount of capability. When you put it that way, it makes no sense to become insanely jealous of the uber fit.
What can you do to avoid this mistake?
Start out by writing down or having a good idea of what your fitness goals are.
What are you trying to achieve? The more clear you can get about that, the better. Take my example: I want to feel strong.
That’s a good example, for two reasons.
- I have stated that what I’m working on is strength: now that means that I can adapt my regime specifically to gaining strength.
- I have written ‘feel’ which is a very different emotion to ‘be’. Your state of being can change daily, but if you feel strong you can tackle even the hardest moments
Negativity of competition
All our lives we’ve been graded for our work, fit into boxes and categorized without even questioning it. What if there was another approach to life? Another approach to fitness?
Though there are some positive factors of competing, namely motivation and …., speaking from someone who’s competed for years I can say that it’s not always that great to be competitive.
You end up trying to become the one that’s ahead of you. You develop jealousy in the place of admiration. And, you feel disappointment when you lose.
So, how to combat this?
Simply put, try sports or activities that don’t involve competition. Sure, sports may be a little hard to find – but I’m sure you can find a local football team that plays purely for fun?
Activities like dance…..are a good way to connect with yourself and gain self confidence in the long run. Win win!
Or, if you don’t want to go cold turkey with competition altogether, how about changing your viewpoint about it?
You can always enter a competition to see how fast you can run your own time. Either that, or you can…
The biggest influencing factor on success in any aspect of life is mindset, second after that will power. If all it takes is a certain mindest though, why do people always give up?
The majority of the time, people give up because they become overwhelmed from some internal or external pressure to not fail. Instead of failing, they hijack their current road to fitness and wellbeing.
Giving up is easier than failure.
How do we get into and stay into a healthy mindset then? The answer is actually in the question. Being healthy isn’t just about losing weight, getting strong or any other goal you’ve set yourself.
The fact of the matter is that your goals always come from the same place: your mind. If you want to truly succeed at a healthy diet and fitness regime, you need to be doing the psychological work that goes with it.
Be that working your traumas, weak points or general lack of motivation – dig deep, see what you can find. See where your habits come from, and start to try and modify them.
We already know the story on this one – it’s one of the most talked about topics out there in modern society. How the media influences us and our expectations of ‘normal’.
What’s interesting to see is there are two very contrasting stories currently out there.
- Highly edited photos of models making us aspire to a certain conception of beauty
- Fast food ads left, right and centre making our mouths drool
From this alone we can gather some insight: the media cannot be trusted. Marketing and media will always push out something new with the aim of selling.
Now there absolutely nothing wrong with the game of selling in itself, when this game is placed in the wrong hands you end up with people feeling deluded and betrayed.
While we can’t draw our blinds or bury our heads in the soil, we can limit the amount of time that we spend in high-publicized environments.
Spoiler: I don’t own a television. I haven’t for years.
I’m not saying that this choice is for everyone, but do limit the amount of time you spend sitting through television adverts. It’s the biggest trap you can fall into.
Instead, pick some body positive people that inspire you – preferably just a little above where you are – and read up on what they have to say.
